Based in Bicheno on the east coast of Tasmania, you might not call Apsley Gorge a cult winery, but there’s no doubt these wines are fervently bought by collectors, and for good reason. Owner and viticulturist Brian Franklin does things his own way, choosing to pick late to build as much flavour as possible. The wines pack a punch and are lower in acidity, with gorgeous texture and richness. Their Pinot Noir is spicy and rich, with a broad textural appeal and a supple finish. That unique climate on Tassie's eastern coast brings forth a unique brooding power here that we rarely get to see; it is truly both a wonderful red to see in its youth, and also one to let unfurl in the cellar over a few years, if you can hold off!
