2015 Vietti Barolo

Vietti vines

Vietti is one of those estates that we really love here, at The Wine Emporium, because they consistently deliver quality wines at reasonable prices. This week we have the beautifully perfumed and fresh, midweight 2015 vintage on offer, including the stupendous Rocche di Castiglione. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of wine around, so first come, first served.

THE WINES

Barbaresco “Masseria” - $155 per bottle
Vietti's 2015 Barbaresco Masseria is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need at least a few years to fully come together. In 2015, the Masseria is a decidedly potent, masculine Barbaresco, with huge tannins and tremendous fruit density. Time in bottle will help soften some of the edges, but I imagine the 2015 will always remain rather somber. Macerated dark cherry, scorched earth, new leather, tobacco and licorice add to an impression of virile intensity. - 92+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo “Castiglione” - $110 per bottle ; $52 per half bottle ; $225 per magnum
Vietti's 2015 Barolo Castiglione is soft, silky and pliant, all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Floral and nicely lifted, the 2015 is very pretty, if not quite the overachiever it can be. I expect the 2015 will be even more expressive once the tannins soften a bit further. In this tasting, the Castiglione stands out for its freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out an extra layer of textural breadth and resonance that is not immediately apparent. - 91 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo “Lazzarito” - $375 per bottle
The 2015 Barolo Lazzarito is one of the highlights in this range from Vietti. The power and gravitas of Serralunga come through loud and clear in a deep, beautifully resonant Barolo loaded with character. Iron, smoke, sage, menthol, licorice and rose petal give the Lazzarito its beguiling aromatic complexity. The massive tannins need time to soften, but there is a lot to look forward to once that happens. - 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo “Ravera” - $375 per bottle
The 2015 Barolo Ravera is once again the head of the class at Vietti. Bright, sculpted and wonderfully nuanced, the Ravera is very pretty. Floral aromatics and the pointed, brilliant fruit that is such a Ravera signature are very much in evidence. Hints of blood orange, mint, crushed rocks and flowers add shades of complexity as the 2015 gradually opens up in the glass. This is one of the finer wines of the year. Don't miss it! - 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo “Rocche di Castiglione” - $375 per bottle
The 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is incredibly inviting from the very first taste. Silky and aromatic, the Rocche shows plenty of the classiness that is such a signature of this Castiglione Falletto site. As with all of these 2015s, readers will have to be patient. The 2015 gains striking volume and resonance with time in the glass, but a few years in bottle are an absolute must for the wine to show at its very best. - 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

A hauntingly complex and finely detailed nose that touches so many different characters. Roses, dried wood, cedar, fine brown spices, light earthy notes, warm stones, mountain herbs and leaves. All here - very complex. The density and weight is exceptional, as is the fine, firm weave of tannins. The length is staggering and the tautness and balance are captivating. One of the stars of the vintage! - 98 Points, James Suckling

Barolo “Brunate” - $375 per bottle
The 2015 Barolo Brunate is powerful and dense in the glass, with plenty of Brunate tannin that enshrouds the palate. Iron, smoke, grilled herb, menthol and spice notes add complexity to the dark, sepia-toned fruit. The 2015 is a baby. It will benefit from several years in bottle and then drink well to age 25-30, perhaps beyond. This is the first vintage made from Vietti's expanded holdings following the acquisition of a parcel that formerly went to Andrea Oberto. - 93+ Points, Antonio Galloni
