Hayes Family Wines Tasting

Brett Pruning

Hayes Family Wines is both a relatively new family winery, and one endowed with incredible experience in growing super premium grapes and crafting world-class wines from historic vineyards. Their vision is to take the best possible inputs, grapes that have been farmed organically or biodynamically, handle them gently, with minimal intervention in the winery to allow the wonderful patchwork Barossa vineyard terroir to express itself in the wines they produce.

In the vineyard, Marcus Schulz brings more than half a century of experience tending vines on his heritage family property in Ebenezer in the Northern Barossa. In the winery, Andrew Seppelt draws on generations of experience, and some 25 plus years of personal winemaking experience to craft wines sensitive to the site, the varieties and the vintage at hand. Andrew brings a sense of tradition and heritage but is able to balance this with the innovations we are seeing as increasing prevalent in the global industry of today, whether they be Ceramic Eggs, Organic and Biodynamic farming principles and low or no additions through the winemaking process.

Hayes Family Wines, Barossa

2019 Barossa Valley Semillon - $26  $22
"The Semillon is light straw tinged with green. Extraordinarily fresh and bright in its youth but the oaked component provides a savoury textural finish. Beautiful spring nose featuring lemon and lime. The wine is light to medium bodied. A wonderful wine to enjoy over the warmer months but with enough structure to handle a few years in the cellar should you desire. " - Hayes Family Wines

2018 Sam's Grenache - $29  $24.50
"The wine mirrors the vintage conditions. A beautiful garnet tinged with purple, pretty violets and field flowers on the nose. Mouth filling flavours of red summer fruits, spice and wonderful length with lingering textural tannins. A beautiful wine to be enjoyed now and in the medium term." - Hayes Family Wines  // 95 Points James Halliday

2018 Barossa Valley GSM - $29  $24.50
"A classic Barossa blend that carries the hallmarks of old vines in a special season. Grenache was truly a star varietal in 2018 and it shows through in this blend. A very versatile wine that will suit a variety of foods across multiple occasions." - Hayes Family Wines

2018 Winemaker's Selection Grenache - $42  $36

2018 Glengrae Grenache - $42  $36
"Hand picked late in the season at low baume, the fruit was de-stemmed before being transferred to a ceramic egg for fermentation prior to spending a few months in an older French puncheon.

The resulting wine is highly perfumed, delicate yet having the length and persistence that this great block can produce in the best of vintages. A wine of rare class that can be enjoyed for many years." - Hayes Family Wines // 97 Points, James Halliday

2018 Kooonunga Grenache - $42  $36
"The fruit was hand-picked then de-stemmed before being transferred to our small fermenters and spending almost 20 days on skins. Once dry, the juice was transferred into older French oak for 9 months prior to being bottled in December 2018.

The resulting wine is highly perfumed, with substantive fruit weight. A wine of intensity and grip that reflects the vintage year to perfection. This can be enjoyed for many years." - Hayes Family Wines // 97 Points, James Halliday

2018 Estate Field Blend GSM - $42  $36
"A classic Barossa blend that carries the hallmarks of our special patch of old vines in Stone Well. A wine that carries the unique characteristics of our site, old vines, and the vintage year.

This wine is bright, displaying lifted florals, red fruits, with a medium bodied pallet supported by fine tannins. A wine that is drinking very well on release and will continue to do so for many years." - Hayes Family Wines  // 95 Points James Halliday
