Founded in 1905, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne started off, like many Southern Rhône estates at the time, by producing fruit that was then sold to négoçiants. This all changed in the 1960s when Maxime Daumen, grandson of the original founder, renovated the Domaine and starts bottling its wines. Over the years and from father to son, the estate evolves, garnering praise and accolades along the way, until Jean-Paul Daumen, the current owner, decides that vines and terroir are the foundation of a great wine and decides to change to organic agriculture with some biodynamic principles also applied. The estate now sits on 15 hectares of old Grenache vines and produces pure, balanced, fragrant wines of great poise and exceptional length. These offerings are not seen very often, which makes this opportunity even more exciting - we have three splendid wines from the Domaine on offer today, including the spectacular 99 Points Les Haut-Lieux Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 2017 Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge - $59
"From a hot, dry year, the 2017 Côtes du Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin comes from old Grenache vines planted in the sandy/clay around the estate, which are just a stone’s throw from where the Châteauneuf-du-Papes come from. One of the best Côtes du Rhône in just about every vintage, this beauty offers a rounded, sexy, medium to full-bodied style as well as terrific notes of blackberries, violets, and licorice. I love its purity, it shows more and more floral character with time in the glass and is going to be a great wine that will keep for 10-15 years." - (92-94) Points, Jeb Dunnuck
2016 Les Trois Sources Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge - $155
"The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources is straight-up sensational and isn’t far off the more expensive Reserve cuvée in style and quality. Huge notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed violets, licorice, and incredible minerality, as well as a smoking floral quality, all soar from the glass of this full-bodied, seamless, pure wine that readers should snatch up. With good acidity, awesome purity, and a great, great finish, it’s an incredible wine any way you look at it. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades or more." - 98 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
2016 Les Hauts-Lieux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge - $215 *limited*
“A true “wow” wine, the deep, concentrated 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux (there’s 20% Mourvèdre) offers awesome notes of blackcurrants, smoked meats, graphite, crushed rocks, and licorice. Extraordinarily concentrated, perfectly balanced, structured, and long, it’s another sensational wine from this estate. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 15-20 after that” - 99 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
