New Year's Bubbles

It's finally the end of what has been a tumultuous year - a couple of prime ministers came and went, there were a few scandals in sports, banking and, of course, politics, but, all in all, it was a pretty good year that deserves a proper farewell. To help you do just that, we've prepared a little list of our favourite bubbles for every budget, from delicious and unpretentious Prosecco to opulent Champagne. NV Belstar Prosecco Brut - $20
"Intensely floral aromas of white and yellow spring flower lead the way on this light and fragrant sparkler. The rather lean racy palate isn't quite as expressive as the nose but still offers green pear and tart apple alongside firm acidity." - Wine Enthusiast

NV Choisel Champagne Brut - $32
"This is a soft succulent champagne with a very pleasing palate. The nose reflects hawthorn and baked brioche and leads to a palate of ripe raspberry, cherries and apricots.  This is following by baked apples with clove, brown pears, mandarin, grilled pomelo ,  almonds in their skins and hints of hazelnut.  There is a layer of apple strudel, melon drizzled with honey,  quince paste and a flick of pineapple.  This is a wonderful champagne for the price and one not to be missed." - Bernadette O'Shea

2011 Frogmore Creek Cuvée - $34
A delicate and elegant wine. The nose opens up on notes of toasted brioche, fresh butter, almonds and wild strawberries. The palate, very delicate, is lifted, with flavours that follow the opening notes. Beautifully textured, easy to drink as an apéritif, but serious enough to match seafood pasta dishes, pâtés and cheeses.

NV Lallier R.014 Brut - $59
With its golden and shiny robe, R.014 delights our eyes while its soft effervescence is mesmerizing. Subtle notes of fresh fruits, citrus fruit and honey making a large range of appealing aromas thanks to its character and generosity. They are a pleasure for the nose. The mouth is tasty with a good structure and a nice freshness in order to be balanced and appealing.

NV Larmandier-Bernier 'Longitude' Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs - $80
"Bright straw. Intensely perfumed bouquet displays aromas of green apple, Anjou pear and quinine, plus a strong chalky mineral overtone. Spicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors are complemented by deeper notes of sweet butter, toasty lees and anise, gaining power with air. Impressively focused on the finish, with strong mineral cut and lingering spiciness." 92 points, Josh Reynolds

NV Ruinart Blanc de Blancs - $110
"Good toasty autolysis-induced nose. Extremely brisk and appetising - seems much drier to me than the launch offering in this new, clear flask bottle. Very clean and fresh." - 17.5 Points, Jancis Robinson

2007 Bollinger La Grande Année - $159 *last of it at that price!
"Disgorged November '17, 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay. 100% barrel fermentation has long been Bollinger practice, and style trademark. The complex bouquet of multi-spice and brioche aromas drape the wine's structure, emphasised by more than eight years on lees and a dosage of 7g/L." - 97 Points, James Halliday

2002 Pommery Cuvée Louise - $250
"Lovely lemon blossom, lily of the valley and stephanotis greet the nose and gently leads to a palate of fleshy white peaches & nectarine, new season strawberry, raspberry, caramelised apple and orange citrus.  The fruit is all wrapped in a veil of crème anglaise & lemon sherbet interspersed with slivers of macadamia & cashew nuts wrapped in honey, layers of nougat, grated cinnamon, hints of mineral and a shower of powdery chalk. There is a great layer of mushroom cream and melted butter on toast which gives a rich voluptuous intensity.

The wine is very poised  & harmonious - has glorious autolysis, class,  finesse, and yet underlying strength and complexity, with caressing silky structure - all in perfect harmony.” – Bernadette O’Shea
