SC Pannell New Arrivals

Pannell tasting room

Established in 2004 by Steve and Fiona Pannell, his wife, his wine label has been garnering praise here and abroad, winning him Best Red in Show at McLaren Vale's Bushing Trophy four times (the only winemaker to do so), being nominated one of the Top 50 most influential wine contributor in the world by Decanter and also Australian winemaker of the year by Gourmet Traveller (plus a few more!).

All of these awards are explained by Steve's immense talent as a winemaker, of course, but add to that McLaren's Vale ability to produce stunning, dry-grown fruit and his holistic approach that starts with climate and emphasises the importance of the vineyard, and you end up with wines of the utmost quality that always impress us.

This week we have some of Steve's latest releases - including the gold medal winner 2016 Gumeracha Nebbiolo and his ever delicious Barbera. All the details below. Enjoy!

THE WINES

2018 Aromatico - $25
"Musk, ginger, rose petal – the GT aromatics ride high – with some citrus and pear under it. Clean lines, something Alsatian in profile albeit in a lighter, fresher frame,  juicy, light chalkiness to texture, a subtle sweetness, and a clean finish with a little pucker of pith in the aftertaste. Walks the tightrope with aplomb. Job’s a good’un." - 94 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2017 Nebbiolo Rosé - $29
“Our Nebbiolo Rosé will always be experimental, & we make it when and if we can. For us, this is edgy stuff, and what's more, the wine is deceptive. While pale, fruit power and texture make for a very serious glass of very pale red wine." - Steve Pannell

2016 Tanino - $25
Malbec, Shiraz, Tinta Cao and Touriga blend
"The wine is restrained and savoury upon opening, but with air and a moment of composure black cherry, blood plum, mulberry and violet aromas escape, leading a palate of dark fruit with a sanguine edge. It's plush, svelte, tight and long, with ample earthy and persistent tannins that despite the name do not overpower, but support a dense core of dark fruit." - Steve Pannell

2017 Barbera - $33
“Naturally less tannic than its regal cousin Nebbiolo but high acidity and deep colour makes it similarly cellar worthy” - Steve Pannell

2017 Cabernet Malbec - $47
“A fortuitous mistake when I found out that Malbec had been planted not Merlot as originally thought. This has allowed me to create a homage to dear friends and a favourite brand, Wendouree, and in particular, their blends. On the nose, cassis to the fore with cherry liquor chocolates, rolling tobacco, frankincense and fresh red timber. The palate is  tightly wound, bold and juicy with ferruginous tannins and a bouncy energy." - Steve Pannell

2016 Nebbiolo - $60
"Bright young thing. Raspberry cordial, blackcurrant, cut fennel, spice and earth, a rose petal perfume emerging. Medium bodied, good volume of flavour, though light in footprint, with a translucent quality, fine cocoa/graphite tannin, cool acidity, and a well-defined finish of excellent length. It has verity and interest. It will age surely, and well. You can enjoy it now, but its best years are ahead of it. Really like this wine." - 93+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
