Riesling Masterclass, Germany + Austria

2017 Koehler Ruprecht Pinot Blanc - $32  $27.50
“Some fresh-nut character, as well as a wide range of white-fruit aromas, making this a rather elegant, medium-bodied pinot blanc that gives a lot of pleasure right now.” – 91 Points, James Suckling

2017 Angsar Clusserath Vom Schiefer - $39  $33
“The 2017 Riesling Vom Schiefer trocken offers a clear, intense and slate-scented nose with refreshing lemon and lime zest aromas. On the palate, this is a charmingly round, intense, well-textured dry Riesling with good concentration and mineral grip. An excellent effort at this price level.” – 89 Points, The Wine Advocate

2018 Christmann Estate Riesling - $39  $33
“I’m partial to a little synaesthesia when it comes to wine, and offer that this wine tastes very ‘yellow’. I’m thinking ripe lemon and something of a fresh apricot kernel, mango and starfruit thing happening, along with a bit of spice, and a tickle of spritz. It’s juicy and fleshy, some zest, a chalky texture, balanced acidity, and a slightly savoury finish of generosity where brine meets spiced peach. It has weight and presence, yet retains an easy charm.” – 93 Points, The Wine Front

2017 Donnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling - $52  $45
“Faint honey toast notes, ripe and fresh stone fruits, floral things, faint bergamot tea character in perfume. Palate is concentrated but very fresh and refreshing, tangy citrus dominates but there’s a light honeyed character under it, and green herbs. All up, brisk and brilliant drinking.” – 94 Points, The Wine Front

2017 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Grosses Gewächs - $75  $64
“From the famous Laychen parcel, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Alte Reben is bright, clear, fine and relaxed on the subtly concentrated nose that displays aromas of perfectly ripe stone fruit intertwined with delicate slate notes. On the palate, this is a concentrated, lush, vital, crystalline, highly refined and complex Sonnenuhr with finely racy acidity, lots of energy, grip and mineral tension. This is a rich, concentrated, powerful but still refined, vital and elegant Sonnenuhr that will improve over the years in the bottle. Tasted in March and April 2019. I tasted the wine from the same bottle 11 days later, and it had improved a lot.” – 96 Points, The Wine Advocate

2017 George Breuer Terra Montosa Riesling - $62  $53
“Around one-quarter of this vintage’s bottling originated in Rauenthal, and that is presumably the source of some intriguingly musky floral notes and a greenhouse-like aura in the nose, which also features pungent notes of lemon and lime rinds. The firmly-textured, palpably extract-rich palate is correspondingly citric, tangy and piquant, with an impressive grip that also puts me in mind of Rauenthal in its resemblance to that of this year’s “Rauenthal Estate” bottling. Hints of stone and iodine add intrigue, but also reinforce this bottling’s overall sense of austerity.” – 90 Points, Vinous

2017 Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Grösses Gewächs - $115  $99
“Deep and complex with plenty of smoke and hot, dry-stone character. The mineral energy of this wine is enormous and there isn't a hint of opulence to stand in its way. Super-long and firm finish. This is as original as it gets. Try in 2019. Screw cap.” – 96 Points, James Suckling

2017 Weingut Knoll Federspiel Riesling - $56  $48
"Clean, fresh, vibrant and bright expression here. All white flesh stone fruit, citrus, floral things. Palate is cut and chalky, tense and true, long and fine with a powdery fan of fresh acidity to close. It’s an acid hound’s style here, so let the air flow through your hair as you sip." – 92 Points, The Wine Front

2017 Weingut Knoll Federspiel Gruner Veltliner - $52  $44
“A fresh and lively Grüner Veltliner with a lot of charm and plenty of green and yellow apple aromas, plus a hint of white pepper. Drink now.” – 90 Points, James Suckling
