2016 Southern Rhône Gems

This week we are quite excited to be able to share with you two delicious Southern Rhône reds that we recently tried and fell in love with. Both are based on the fruity Grenache grape with the first one, a Côtes du Rhône, being soft, textured and deliciously easy to approach, and the second one a dense, dark, brawny Châteauneuf-du-Pape that, albeit delightful now, will truly bloom into a spectacular offering with some cellaring patience.

Poggio Scalette & Jurij Fiore

In the very heart of the Chianti Classico appellation sits Poggio Scalette's beautiful old vineyards. Re-planted right after World War I, the estate then went through some misfortunes and fell into disrepair until the early 90s, when it was re-discovered by famed winemaker Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana. Still run by the latter, but  now with Vittorio's son Jurij at the helm of winemaking, the estate produces some of the best Chianti Classico around, at excellent prices.

Vietti is one of those estates that we really love here, at The Wine Emporium, because they consistently deliver quality wines at reasonable prices. This week we have the beautifully perfumed and fresh, midweight 2015 vintage on offer, including the stupendous Rocche di Castiglione. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of wine around, so first come, first served.
