Domaine Tempier is one of the unsung heroes of the wine world. They have been producing world-class wines for over 80 years and helped create the Bandol AOC in 1941, and, despite their cult status, still seem to remain known only to wine collectors and aficionados. We aim to change that today by proudly offering you their latest 2016 vintage.
Said vintage was marred by both cold weather in the early season followed by droughts and scorching heat, but this only serves to truly showcase the brilliance of the Domaine's viticultural team preparation work. By working in sync with the vines and the terroir, the team managed to harvest a bountiful and healthy crop, with the weather naturally limiting yields and concentrating fruit. The wines are available to collect now, but in limited quantities, so first in best dressed. Enjoy!

2017 Bandol Blanc - $64 (*limited)
60% Clairette, 18% Ugni Blanc, 19% Bourboulenc, 3% Marsanne
Apricot and peach greets the nose, with underlying aromas of fennel, citrus and honeysuckle. The palate is textured and bold without being heavy, marked by flavours of preserved lemons, stone fruits and a slight salty je ne sais quoi that brings the whole thing together in a beautiful, fragrant wine that will pair nicely with a lazy afternoon, fresh veggie pasta and light fish dishes.
2016 Bandol Rouge "Cuvée Classique" - $68 per bottle ; $44 per 375mL ; $153 per 1500mL (*very limited in magnum)
75% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 2% Carignan
Brambly dark fruit pops out of the glass, quickly followed by herby sage and crushed pepper, with hints of raspberry pips and faint dark flower aromas. The palate is full and rounded, muscular, very energetic, with freshness, lift and mouth-watering tannins. Flavours of dark cocoa, garrigue and blackberries close the deal on this surprisingly elegant monster of a wine. This will cellar extremely well, but is so very pleasant right now – pair it with game, red meats and roasts for a winning combination.
2016 Bandol Rouge "La Tourtine" - $119 (*limited)
80% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache, 10% Cinsault
What a graceful beast of a wine this is! Think Cuvée Classique, but on steroids… The classic aromas of brambles, blackberries, cocoa and garrigue are all here, but amped up and ready to go. The palate is once again full, rounded and brawny, but backed by a vibrant acidity that leaves nothing out of place. The scrumptious tannins, although grippier than in the Classique, are perfectly in sync with the rest of the wine. Will last forever if care is taken in the cellar, but would match heavier Provençal dishes like daube, Gordienne beef (red wine stew) or lamb Gardiane (stew with olives) right about now.
