Tenuta Ulisse

san stefano

Two hours east of Rome lies the rugged Adriatic region of Abruzzo, where Montepulciano is king. Often underappreciated, this indigenous varietal can provide wines of exceptional quality and great value when handled correctly and this week we are happy to introduce you to the wines of Tenuta Ulisse - one of the foremost producers of the region.

Although a relative newcomer to the wine scene in Abruzzo, the family owned estate has been making tremendous contributions to the rebirth of the appellation by carefully selecting the most expressive and unique terroirs and bringing modern techniques in the winery to produce wines of distinction and with a true sense of place. The wines on offer today caught our attention because of their amazing value and excellent quality, and we're sure you'll enjoy them as much as we did. All the details below. Enjoy!

2017 Terre di Chieti Pecorino - $24
Bright straw yellow in colour, with tinges of green. The nose opens up on fruity aromas of citrus, white peach, papaya and gorgeous tropical nuances. The palate is structured, with bright freshness, and with a long, slightly balsamic finish. A dream to pair with anything fish, from sushi to shellfish and also with summery veggie pasta.

2016 Sogno di Ulisse Montepulciano - $17
Ruby red, with shades of purple. Plums and ripe red cherries pop from the glass, blending gracefully with blueberries, blackcurrants and hints of morello cherries. Medium bodied, softly textured and lovely fruit weight, this little number is the perfect 'weekday' wine - will match tomato based pasta, roasts and bbqs.

2016 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - $25
Ruby red, with garnet reflections. The nose shows intense dark fruit, where blueberry mingles with cherries and ripe, red plums, followed by hints of crushed dried thyme and wisps of smoky blackberries. Fuller bodied than the Sogno, the balance between tannins, acidity and fruit weight is remarkable, with nothing out of place - perfect match to heavier dishes and mature cheeses, but splendid as a 'meditation' wine.

10 Vendemmie Limited Edition - $67 *very limited
Ten vintages in a single 750ml bottle, blended and released as one. Tenuta Ulisse’s 10 Vendemmie Limited Edition is a natural end result of the venerated art of blending. It is a multi-vintage blend where each individual vintage selected delivers a depth of character and flavour.

Dark red in colour, with shades of purple. The nose is complex, with dark blackberries and red plums combining with spicy mesquite and crushed tobacco for a profound and enchanting introduction to the wine. The palate is full-bodied, broad and muscular, with hints of dark cocoa and roasted coffee, balanced by slight vanilla sweetness. The tannins, albeit very present, are smooth and rich. This wine begs for a decant and for red meat or game. It's also the perfect wine to savour and watch evolve over several hours.
