Yangarra New Releases

Yangarra Vines

McLaren Vale's Yangarra produces single-vineyard wines from biodynamically farmed grapes with a focus on the traditional Southern Rhône varieties like Shiraz and Grenache. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing those varieties and that's readily reflected in their excellent offerings. This week we are honoured to be able to offer you some of their fantastic new releases - including the stunning 98 Points High Sands Grenache (planted in 1946!) and the impressive Iron Heart Shiraz.

THE WINES

2017 Roussanne - $26
"From its silky, slightly smoky, oriental fragrance, which somehow smells like pale gold, through its mellow middle to the fine drawn-out tannins of its tail, it is simply one smooth lovely ride. Its flesh is plush without pudge, its acid solid but reserved, its length, poise and form just perfect. It will live, mellow, burnish and bloom for many years in the cellar." - Peter Fraser, Winemaker

2017 Grenache Shiraz Mataro - $26
"A 60/22/18% blend, a lovely wine from a lovely vintage. It’s not an ounce over medium-bodied, but it articulates the place, varieties and the year with utmost clarity. Fine tannins are stitched through the scarlet taffetta of the perfectly pitched palate." - 95 Points, James Halliday

2017 Ovitelli Grenache - $43
"I adore the individual nature of this wine. The medium-depth colour is clear and vibrant. Snappy and fragrant are the cherry aromas. The palate is light yet textural; it epitomises suppleness and the flavours are lively and intense. I particularly enjoy the burst of cherry fruit on the finish, with the flavours long and satisfying." - 97 Points, Toni Pattinson, The Real Review

2015 High Sands Grenache - $95
"From Block 31, the highest section of the vineyard at 210m planted '46, 50% whole berries, 50% destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, matured for 10 months in used French oak. For many devotees of McLaren Vale grenache, Yangarra Estate High Sands is the king. It's not for idle dalliance as is young grenache that is focused on freshness and purity of red fruit flavours, this has power and depth, the oak simply softening an edge or two here and there, most assuredly not about imparting oak flavour. Red and black fruits both contribute without cutting across the power of the other." - 98 Points,  James Halliday

2017 King's Wood Shiraz - $43
"A rare mix of power and restraint. Perfectly ripe, bright, concentrated fruit in the red cherry, raspberry and red plum sphere. The palate is captivating with its plush, supple, velvety nature. All of the elements are perfectly integrated. Certified organic and biodynamic. Highly recommended" - 96 Points, Toni Patterson, The Real Review

2016 Iron Heart Shiraz - $85
"Lovely wine this. Straight up impressive. Sandy swish of tannins is the lingering thought, but there’s dark berry-cherry perfume, ripe of course, but shy of over done, sniffs of old spice cupboard, succulence writ large. It’s long, fine and elegant in its way, but doesn’t forget the earthy, regional grunt of the region. Just enough of everything, plus an individual personality, and the wine feels gently done. Again, a lovely wine." - 95 Points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
