The Fontodi estate lies in the amphitheatre like area below the town of Panzano, known as the 'Conca d’Ora' or 'golden shell'. Their vineyards are sun-drenched and south-facing, giving maximum opportunity for ripeness. The soils are rocky and high in limestone, providing great drainage while naturally limiting yields and driving intensity. The Manettis believe that this remarkable terroir is expressed more clearly and expressively through Sangiovese alone than blended with any other grape, and given the calibre of these wines, it's hard to argue.

Things move slowly at Cascina Disa, a modest 7 ha estate high-up in the hills of the Perno Cru of Monforte d’Alba. It's a measured and patient approach that is out-of-step with modern wisdom and one which the Sandri family have dedicated themselves to religiously since taking over the estate back in 1965. The end game is producing wines of deep provenance and longevity, classically styled Barolo that hark back to the towering Barolo made by the legendary producers of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
